Legal Stuff

Stuff you need to know.

Hosts are responsible for the actions and alcohol consumption of their guests.  However, a good bartender knows how to gauge the alcohol level of individuals and knows when enough is enough.  Ohio law forbids the serving of alcohol to any individual who displays signs of intoxication.  Please understand that I retain the right to refuse service to any individual that I deem intoxicated, and your support in these decisions is required.

Alcohol service to minors under the age of 21 is strictly forbidden.  Please keep in mind that if you have young people attending, ID will be required.  So, please make sure they know this ahead of time.  The only forms of ID I will accept are a VALID drivers license, an Ohio State ID card, or Military ID.

Ohio law DOES permit the serving of alcohol to minors only by their parent or legal guardian.  I cannot serve the minor, but can serve the parent.  Where the drink goes after that is up to them.  But again, I will refuse service to any adult who allows their child to become intoxicated.

If you have young children attending and wish them served from the bar, I can prepare different non-alcoholic beverages so that they can fit in with the rest of the party.

Just What is it and how much does it cost?

When serving alcohol at any event, the host becomes solely and legally responsible for their guest.  This not only includes what happens during the event, but also includes what happens when the guest(s) leave Private Event Insurance liability coverage protects you if you're held responsible for alcohol-related accidents, property damage, or bodily injury at your event or arising from it.

Again, liability insurance is payment in the event you are sued for a guests behavior.  How much liability insurance should you carry?  Put yourself in this scenario.  If a member of your family was killed in an auto accident by a person who was drinking, what would you consider to be a fair settlement?

For a typical home-based holiday party in Ohio, a $500,000 policy would run $150.00  A $1,000,000 would run $175.

Rates vary depending on the type of event you are having.  If you want more information including purchasing a policy, please visit the website at
